Wicked: Collector’s Edition is an eye-catching new hardcover with green stained edges, a ribbon bookmark, foil-stamped cover art, and a detailed map of Oz. Most new hardcover books have dust jackets with cover art, while the actual cover is largely plain. If you don’t own any foil-stamped books, they tend to look even better in person and are unique display pieces for fans.
Wicked: Collector’s Edition releases September 24 and retails for $40 , but Amazon is offering a 30% preorder discount at the moment, dropping the price down to $28. This is pretty standard pricing for a new hardcover book, so it’s nice to see a “collector’s edition” of a great novel being priced reasonably.
If you like the look of foil-stamped covers, it’s worth noting that one week prior to Wicked: Collector’s Edition’s release, the Lord of the Rings trilogy–Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, and Return of the King–will be re-released with with the same foil-stamped style. A box set of these $35 LOTR Collector’s Editions will release November 5. The Hobbit and The Silmarillion have already released in this format.
Barnes & Noble also has exclusive collectible editions of Wicked and The Wizard of Oz with bonded-leather covers. Wicked costs $35 and also comes with Son of a Witch, the second novel in the series, and The Wizard of Oz is only $15.
Revamping a beloved classic like The Wizard of Oz is risky and hard to pull off, but Gregory Maguire did just that with Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire turned L. Frank Baum’s children’s novel and timeless film starring Dorothy into a novel focused on the original book’s key villain.

The Wicked Years puts a darker spin on the land of Oz, its inhabitants, its Wizard, and the Emerald City. Wicked, the first novel in the series and the basis for the popular musical, tells the story of a little green-skinned girl named Elphaba Thropp, who will grow up to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. While she has a thorny disposition, she’s still focused on challenging preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil in a world where talking animals and Munchkinlanders work to be treated like first-class citizens.
The second book, Son of a Witch, is set a decade later and follows her son Liir as he recovers from physical and spiritual injuries. Book three, A Lion Among Men, takes place in the shadow of a looming civil war in Oz and sees an enigmatic figure arrive in town looking for information on the Wicked Witch of the West.
Finally, Out of Oz has a lot going on. The Emerald City is mounting an invasion of Munchkinland, The Good Witch of the North, Glinda, is in quite the predicament, the Cowardly Lion is on the run from the law, and a familiar face returns.
There are a bunch of other cool pieces of Wicked merchandise that you can check out before the film arrives in theaters. There’s the Wicked: Pop-Up Book, a cloth-bound replica of the of the Ozian book from the novel that is a beautifully illustrated poem detailing the Wizard’s arrival in Oz; and Wicked: The Grimmerie Collectible Hardcover Journal is designed to resemble the Grimmerie, an ancient book of spells used by the Wicked Witch of the West. You can complete your collection with this behind-the-scenes look at the Wicked musical, to see just how enchanting the stage show is as it draws in 15,000 people every week to see it live.
