Meatspace Interactive’s Vendetta Forever is a brilliant puzzle shooter for PSVR2. Across a hearty supply of levels –many of them goofy or fun in tone – you’re tasked with killing a collection of faceless grunts all wielding an impressive array of weapons. But here’s the catch: you can only move by killing an enemy and teleporting to their weapon, thereby replacing one of your own. It breathes an impressive amount of strategy into the experience.
The gunplay is fluid and responsive, although tracking does lose your location occasionally. Luckily, it rarely ruins a run. And if it does, the levels are designed to be bite-sized. Most run about 30 seconds, encouraging repeats until you craft a flawless run.
The combat is unbelievably satisfying. Guns feel great to fire, both in trigger tension and audio design, and throwable melee weapons moreso. There’s nothing better than fanning out three kunai and bulls-eyeing three enemies in the forehead simultaneously. It’s the closest emulation of a John Wick film we’ve encountered to date, and it’s incredible.
Weapon variety is impressive, with heaps of handguns, numerous throwables, and heftier fare like assault rifles or shotguns. The variety is such that you’ll likely use about six or seven different weapons even on the simplest levels. And once you get into a flow state? Forget it. The speed and precision with which you can navigate your environment is peerless. The only issue is that tracking ammo can be tricky in the heat of the moment.
Make sure you bring a change of clothes, as you are going to sweat. The game is quite the workout. And be careful of keeping anything within arm’s reach, as the game will frequently have you operating within a full 360-degree circle.
Vendetta Forever ends up having a highly replayable gameplay loop with slick combat and incredible variety. This is one of the best titles to hit PSVR2 this year without question.
