Bolstered by some stunning art and animation (which runs at up to 4K resolution and at 120 FPS no less) and hugely satisfying platforming, exploration and combat, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is shaping up to be one of the best Prince of Persia games in, well, decades.

Described as one of the ‘longest’ Like A Dragon/Yakuza titles ever made, Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth looks to be the long-running series most ambitious effort to date. Not only does it have a massive 80 plus hour campaign stuffed with all of the side quests, side activities and general offbeat hilarity one would expect, but so too does Infinite Wealth also pack in a new roguelike mode, an Animal Crossing style side activity and a map that is three times(!) the size of the world seen in 2020’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon. Throw in some tremendous celebrity guests (see Danny Trejo below), a completely new Hawaiian set adventure and what looks to be the final time around the block for the series long-time protagonist Kazuma Kiryu, and it looks like Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth could well define the franchise for years to come.

The latest entry in a fighting franchise will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024, Tekken 8 looks every bit like the super-powered next entry in the series that fighting fans have long craved. Powered by Unreal Engine 5, Tekken 8 isn’t set to be one of the best looking fighting games ever, but so too does it meaningfully expand on previous entries in the series with expanded per-character story modes, a lobby style battle mode called Arcade Quest, more destructive environments and a new Heat combat system which opens up a range of new moves and combo potential. Throw in online co-op play for up to four players and it’s clear that Granblue Fantasy: Relink is shaping up to be one of the more impressive and ambitious adventures of the year.

Though Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is very much not another in the long line of Batman Arkham games that its developer is rightly famed for, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League nonetheless has an air of anticipation around it simply due to its setting. As the titular Suicide Squad, you (and some human/CPU controlled buddies) are tasked with taking down the Justice League which has become corrupted by cosmic archvillain Brainiac as part of his invasion of Earth. How this all plays out is as a third-person, platforming shooter where as one of the Suicide Squad (Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang or King Shark), you’re tasked with traversing a massive open-world take on Metropolis, completing missions, defeating enemies and teaming up to smash up bosses. Where Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League has lost some of its lustre however, is in the seemingly shoehorned live service elements which bring odious things like Battle Passes and microtransactions. Not great then, but time will tell of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League is more than sum of its parts or not.

An opulent and resoundingly enjoyable 4 vs 4 online party shooter, Foamstars not only allows you to blast your opponents with foam to win the day but so too does it allow you to sculpt the battlefield to your preference – enabling players to construct terrain with unique vantage points, slippery surfaces to move at high speeds, fortifications and more besides. If Square-Enix and Toylogic deliver on what Foamstars promises then the PS5 could have its very own Splatoon! era – and I’m absolutely here for that.

Eschewing the top-down perspective of its nine year old predecessor, Helldivers 2 instead unfolds its unique take on intergalactic violence from a third-person perspective, allowing it to take ample advantage of the PS5’s much improved processing grunt over the PS4 in the process. Though the perspective has changed, the essence has not – this is still very much Helldivers at its core. This means you and up to three other Helldivers are tasked with bringing liberty and democracy to a range of different planets by, well, killing everything and moving onto the next. Naturally, this also means upgrading your weapons, stomping around in huge mechs, using two-man railguns and being ‘accidentally’ crushed by your mate as their dropship lands on your skull after a respawn. Though Helldivers 2 looks incredible and will surely be a whole heap of fun, the seeming lack of split-screen co-op – which was arguably a selling point of the original game – still rankles somewhat.

An unexpected but welcome surprise, the first three of the PS1/PSOne Tomb Raider games are being dusted off and re-released on PS5 this year in a handy remastered collection. A true blast from the past, though all three games have had a number of visual improvements including higher resolution, improved framerate, better lighting and more detailed textures and character models (complete with the option to revert to the ‘old’ visuals in each game), they are each fundamentally the same games as they were back in 1996, 1997 and 1998 respectively. As an additional bonus each game also includes the additional expansion missions that were released later on. One for Tomb Raider fans and old crusties like me that have fond memories of playing the original Tomb Raider on the very first PlayStation console, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft (I’m not sure who else it would star?) looks set to be an enticing trip down memory lane.

Seemingly trapped in Davy Jones’ Locker for the better part of a decade, Ubisoft’s Skull & Bones is an open-world, pirate adventure with live service underpinnings that owes more than a little debt to the pirate bits of 2013’s excellent Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag. After going through multiple stops, starts and reboots over the years, it’s honestly some sort of miracle that Skull & Bones is here. As to whether or not Black Flag’s pirate mechanics can sustain a whole game across multiple years however is a question that we do not yet have the answer to.

From wild weather patterns to landscape shattering earthquakes, radioactive phenomena and terrifying mutated remnants, Pacific Drive looks to be delectably irresistible cocktail of driving, crafting, exploration and first-person survival.

Pentiment is a historical narrative-driven game set in the Bavarian Alps during the 16th century that is probably quite unlike anything else you have ever played (and considering its developer is Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment, that’s saying something). In Pentiment you play as Andreas Maler, a skilled artist and scholar traveling across Europe who gets unceremoniously tangled up in a series of murders spanning a quarter of a decade. Pentiment is not your typical action-packed title, that’s for sure. Boasting a slow-burning narrative experience that invites you to think, explore, and immerse yourself in a captivating historical mystery, Pentiment’s mysteries unfold across a twenty-five year span of time, with the characters and locations that you visit all aging and changing in different ways. Prepare to be challenged by ethical dilemmas, complex characters, and the weight of your choices. If you enjoy narrative-driven games, historical settings, and making impactful decisions, Pentiment looks set to find a welcome home on PS5.

The second in a planned trilogy of games that looks to comprehensively remake its 1997 source material, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth doesn’t just bring the first lot of post-Midgar acts kicking and screaming into 2024, but so too does it look set to take some different directions with the narrative (no spoilers here – but suffice to say if you’ve played the thoroughly great Final Fantasy VII Remake, you’ll know what to expect). Whisking players off to the Golden Saucer in shiny 4K certainly looks to be one of 2024’s most tantalising gaming treats but really, the move to a much more open-world twinned with its predecessor’s superb combat and pristine presentation is the most compelling part of what already looks like to be a sure-fire Game of the Year candidate for 2024.

The latest effort from Dragon’s Crown and 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim developer Vanillaware, the awesomely titled Unicorn Overlord is a fantasy tactical RPG that combines Vanillaware’s strong art direction and character design with massive non-linear strategy RPG beats. Putting players in command a sprawling army into which up to 60 different heroes can be chosen and utilised, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, special abilities and narrative background, Unicorn Overlord is rapidly shaping up to be another must-have for devoted fans of both Vanillaware and tactical RPGs in general.

Riding high on the success of a reinvigorated WWE 2K franchise thanks to the largely excellent releases of WWE 2K22 and WWE 2K23 in the last two years respectively, WWE 2K24 comes storming into 2024 with perhaps the most ambitious story campaign mode of them all – a 2K Showcase mode which focuses on the biggest WrestleMania moments of the superstars of both yesteryear and today. Marry that up with improved visuals, the largest roster ever at more than 200(!) wrestlers to choose from and a further refined grappling engine, and it looks very much like 2K will score a wrestling hat-trick with what appears to be its most comprehensive instalment to date.

In Hi-Fi Rush, you take on the role of Chai, an aspiring rockstar whose life takes a wild turn when a corporate procedure goes wrong, fusing his heart with a music player and, well, you can probably guess what happens next. This rather unexpected upgrade grants him the ability to not only feel the rhythm around him, but also manipulate it to his advantage to channel tremendous amounts of energy into just about any scenario. Now labelled a defect, Chai is hunted by the evil tech megacorp responsible for the mishap, but instead of cowering, he fights back with – you guessed it – rhythm-amplified combat.
Imagine stylish action sequences where your attacks flow seamlessly to the beat, enemies telegraph their moves in sync with the music, and even the environment pulsates with rhythm. As Chai, you’ll team up with a ragtag crew of allies, each with their own unique fighting styles and personalities, to rebel against the corporate overlords and expose their nefarious plans as you leap, smash and rock through this tremendous rhythmic odyssey with style to spare.

It’s certainly fair to say that the Alone in the Dark franchise has really struggled to capture the glory years of the 1990s, when it largely kickstarted the third-person survival horror genre which Capcom’s Resident Evil franchise would soon sculpt in its own image. Looking to recapture some measure of its standing in the genre, 2024’s Alone in the Dark is a from the ground-up reboot that not only brings in some Hollywood heavy hitters as the dual lead protagonists (notably Stranger Things star David Harbour and Killing Eve breakout actress Jodie Comer), but so too does it reimagine its 1920’s dark mysteries with some eye-popping visuals and reworked combat. Already delayed a number of times for additional polish, the fact that we’re getting a new Alone in the Dark game that actually looks really rather good is a cause for celebration indeed.

Capcom’s long-awaited sequel to Dragon’s Dogma is nearly here and boy oh boy does it look good. Dragon’s Dogma 2 doesn’t just give players more of what they loved back in 2012 with an extra shiny sheen on top, it also meaningfully builds upon those solid foundations with a massive new world, stunning boss encounters that are rife with spectacle, entirely reworked enemy AI and the sort of sophisticated, skill-based combat that would make Elden Ring developer FROM Software blush. With the fourteen year wait nearly over, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the sort of dark action RPG sequel that will surely draw new fans to the franchise and reinvigorate the action RPG genre in the process.

Coming from Nioh developer Team Ninja, Rise of the Rōnin follows a similar design through line to those games but looks set to elevate itself even further still. An open world, combat action adventure, Rise of the Rōnin has players taking control of the titular masterless samurai as they wage war against the corrupt government and the foreign powers that have emboldened them. Encompassing an epic adventure that unfolds across Edo, Kyoto and Yokohama in the late 19th century, Rise of the Rōnin doesn’t just boast Team Ninja’s trademark challenging melee and ranged combat, but so too does it take a leaf from the book of FROM Software’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice by allowing players to traverse the landscape by using a handy grappling hook and even a primitive glider. Highly anticipated for what seems like years, Rise of the Rōnin is poised to be one of the PS5 exclusives of the year when it releases this March.

Shrunk down to the size of ants, you and up to three friends must explore the treacherous, yet beautiful, backyard as Grounded unfurls a survival sandbox quite unlike any other.
In Grounded, every dewdrop becomes a perilous pond, a ladybug a lumbering giant, and even a simple acorn a valuable resource. Gather materials, craft tools and armor, and build bases to shelter from the elements and hungry insects. Hunger and thirst are constant threats. Scavenge for food and water, learning the dangers and benefits of the microscopic world. A juicy aphid might be a feast, but its soldier kin won’t hesitate to defend it. You don’t remember how you shrunk or why you’re here. Scattered throughout the backyard are clues left by a mysterious scientist, Dr. Tully. Follow his trail, decipher his recordings, and unravel the secrets behind your miniature predicament.
Was it an accident? An experiment gone wrong? The truth awaits, but be warned, uncovering it may involve facing even bigger dangers. Teamwork is key as you must share resources, build elaborate bases together, and strategize how to tackle the oversized backyard denizens. From the territorial ladybug to the fearsome spider, each encounter demands careful planning and coordinated action. After all, shrinking down might be scary, but the journey to get back to normal can be an unforgettable (and hilarious) adventure.

One of the most stylish looking action games of the year, Stellar Blade comes from Korean developer Shift Up and essentially casts the player as an augmented warrior in a far future setting as they attempt to fend off an alien invasion. A third-person action adventure that leans heavily into hyperkinetic genre efforts like Devil May Cry 5, Stellar Blade doesn’t just place a premium on high octane hybrid melee and ranged combat, but so too does it also emphasise verticality too, with Eve able to wall-run, scale walls use swinging ropes and more besides. With a new Devil May Cry yet to be announced by Capcom, Stellar Blade looks like it will fill that niche rather nicely indeed.

Whether playing solo or with friends, Sea of Thieves provides a seemingly never-ending litany of exciting quests to complete as you raise the sails, fire your cannons and complete voyages for Trading Companies, earning gold and reputation through tasks like hunting treasure, solving riddles, and delivering cargo. Filled to the brim with emergent player stories, Sea of Thieves lets you determine exactly what kind of pirate you want to be. If you’re trying to think of a more anticipated title than Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree story expansion in 2024 and you can’t, don’t be too hard on yourself – FROM Software’s continuation of arguably its most beloved title to date is on wish lists everywhere for good reason. Delectably doubling down on the gorgeously grim world building, challenging encounters and deep lore that made 2022’s Elden Ring such a joy to play, Shadow of the Erdtree is quite literally ‘more Elden Ring’ and there are millions of people – including yours truly – that are over the moon at that notion.

An action RPG that is firmly rooted in Chinese mythology (and specifically the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West), Black Myth: Wukong is a stunning, Unreal Engine 5 powered action adventure that puts players in control of a magical monkey character based on Sun Wukong, as they carve through hordes of mystical foes and change into different animals to reach inaccessible areas. Representing arguably the most bombastic take on Journey to the West to date, Black Myth: Wukong looks like it’ll satisfy action adventure fans with aplomb when it releases later this year.

An entirely new sci-fi FPS PvP property from developer Firewalk Studios, Concord is essentially a 5v5 hero shooter that combines Guardians of the Galaxy style intergalactic humour with a hefty dose of Overwatch style hero FPS combat. The promise of a more socially integrated multiplayer FPS effort together with ‘every time you log on is the beginning of a new adventure and every match is an opportunity for a new story.’ certainly sounds interesting at this early juncture already, especially as we’re told that before you play each game you’re treated a new in-game cutscene that furthers the lore of Concord. Quite a neat touch that should help to separate it from other hero shooters on the market. A beta for Concord will take place in July 2024.

Coming from the same studio that brought us 2023’s superb Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, Star Wars Outlaws is a massively (if you’ll excuse the pun) open world effort set between the events of Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi which puts players in the well-worn boots of an intergalactic fugitive that must clear her name all the while navigating the murky waters that lay between the Rebellion and the Empire. Boasting eye-opening visuals, together with super solid cover shooter gameplay, riveting space combat and enough story missions to keep you going for upwards of a hundred hours, Star Wars Outlaws is on target to be a massive (sorry, again) hit with Star Wars fans and fans of gargantuan action adventures alike.

Boasting more than 80 different themed levels, 15 new abilities, stunningly gorgeous visuals that would make even the most avid platform fan week, not to mention more references to PlayStation IP than you can shake a hairy stick at and it’s clear – really, really clear – that Astro Bot is already shaping up to be a supremely strong GOTY candidate.

Perhaps one of the most requested remakes of all-time, Silent Hill 2 Remake developer Bloober Team certainly has its work cut out for it in attempting to remake one of the most iconic survival horror efforts ever made. Though Bloober Team’s resume is fine enough with the likes of the very good Observer and Layers of Fear games to its credit, Silent Hill 2 Remake feels like an order of magnitude higher than any of those titles and with so little media released to this point for the game, the jury is still out as to whether or not Bloober Team have been successful in this most challenging of endeavours. Hopefully we won’t have too much longer to find out.

An entirely fresh JRPG effort from heralded genre experts Atlus, Metaphor: ReFantazio thrusts players into an imperiled kingdom whereupon they are tasked with lifting a curse from the kingdom’s lost prince. Absolutely stuffed with the stylish hallmarks of the Persona series, Metaphor: ReFantazio looks set to be a sprawling and epic JRPG that combines tremendous turn-based combat, characters and a compelling story to create one of the best examples of the genre in years. JRPG fans will not want to miss out on this.

Finally taking the Assassin’s Creed series to the long awaited setting of Sengoku Japan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows casts players as either Naoe, a shinobi from a broken home or Yasuke, a historical real-life Samurai from that period and intertwines their story with intersectional story campaign quests and separate quests that are unique to each protagonist. Exclusive to current-gen consoles and PC, Assassin’s Creed Shadows makes the most of its hardware uptick with greatly improved visuals, revamped physics and a dynamic seasonal system that can cause the world to change in real-time (think where there was once an impassable lake in the summer, that same lake can just be walked across when it freezes over in the winter). Principally in development from the same team that brought us Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Assassin’s Creed Shadows looks like it will very much raise the bar again for Ubisoft’s long-running series when it drops later this year.

Another highly prized Konami title that’s getting the remake treatment, much like the Silent Hill 2 Remake a full-blooded remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater has been on the wish lists of series fans for years. Though Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater massively ups the audiovisual presentation side of things, early indications are that this is still very much an effort that is faithful to the source material and considering just how good and well-regarded the PS2 original was and is, this can only be a good thing.

In addition to managing the airship itself and upgrading it as and when you can, you’ll also take frequent sojourns to the surface where you can investigate old ruins, settlements and other such points of interest as you research new technology and unlock new frontiers to visit. If you’ve been feeling a little burnt out on the survival sandbox genre, Forever Skies could be just the thing to get you stuck back in again.

Tasked with taking down the evil Humgrump and restore the happy ending to their book, Jot and friends must leap between 2D and 3D worlds as they box with badgers, fly jetpacks, solve puzzles and complete a massive variety of innovative mini-games in order to win the day. Don’t sleep on The Plucky Squire. Trust me.

The latest offering to come from Supermassive Games, the much heralded developer behind the likes of Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures Anthology and The Quarry, The Casting of Frank Stone is an entirely new survival offering which takes place in the hugely popular Dead by Daylight universe. Though precious little has been shown regarding the game, it’s probably fair to say that The Casting of Frank Stone will boast stunning visuals, dread-filled atmospherics and the sort of non-linear game design that Supermassive Games has been long known for.
