The Minecraft Movie trailer is every bit as strange as fans feared it’d be

Published:

Mojang Studios’ Minecraft is the best-selling video game of all time, so its no surprise it would eventually become a feature film. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have finally released a teaser trailer for live-action/animated movie, and it’s… well, it’s something.

The film, titled A Minecraft Movie, follows four misfits who feel like outsiders in the real world and find themselves getting sucked into the Minecraft universe. Faced with the prospect of taking on the various monsters of the Overworld, the four recruit the help of a builder named Steve to help master the ways of crafting and embrace their creativity to make it back home. Jack Black, known for his roles in previous video game adaptations like Borderlands and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, leads the film as Steve, with Aquaman star Jason Momoa and The Color Purple‘s Danielle Brooks among the four strangers who need to return home.

Based on this premise, the film aims to capture the spirit of the games by focusing on being able to build anything no matter how strange. Unfortunately, the trailer reveal hasn’t gone over well with both fans of the games and the general public. Several users on X/Twitter are roasting the trailer for its strange blend of CGI and live-action, Jason Momoa’s hair and outfit, and Jack Black’s overall casting as Steve.

It’s safe to say that A Minecraft Movie failed to make a good first impression. But does this mean the film is destined to flop no matter what? There is still a lot of time, and certainly more trailers and clips, between now and the film’s release on April 4 next year. Perhaps people’s opinions will change when we learn more about this strange little film.
