Skyrim Lead Designer Says Bethesda Could ‘Have A Higher Degree Of Polish,’ But Bug-Free Games Are ‘Impossible’

The lead designer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has revealed during an interview with VideoGamer that Bethesda “could have a higher degree of polish” in its games, but admitted that a bug-free experience would pretty much be “impossible” to achieve.

Bruce Nesmith, who also worked on Fallout as a quest designer, had the following to say when discussing the amount of bugs present in Bethesda-developed titles:

I will be the first person to say that Bethesda Games could have a higher degree of polish. They have benefited, and when I was there I benefited, from providing such a wide and vast array of gameplay that a certain amount of lack of polish could be forgiven. Having an NPC run in place in front of a wall for a little while became acceptable because of the 17 things you could do with that NPC, whereas most games you’d be able to do two.

What about having a game without any bugs at all, though? Well, according to Nesmith, that’s “impossible,” as these days video games feature “so many working elements that are trying to interact with one another. There is no game on the market that is bug free.

The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim is one of the most successful games released by Bethesda to date, and has been made available on three generation of consoles following its initial release in 2011 for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
