The president of SEGA has revealed during an interview with the BBC that the Sonic the Hedgehog creator is looking at launching its own gaming subscription service.
Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony each have their own dedicated gaming subscription package for their respective audiences, and subscription products in general like Netflix have become huge in the past decade or so. Sony’s PlayStation Plus offers three different tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium, with the latter encompassing titles spanning PlayStation’s entire console history.
Now, Utsumi-san said that SEGA is looking at doing the same, stating that the company finds subscription services “very interesting” and that it was “evaluating some opportunities” of its own. “We’re thinking something — and discussing something — we cannot disclose right now,” he added.

Speaking in a separate interview, Utsumi also revealed that SEGA is not planning any additional mini consoles such as a Saturn or Dreamcast, saying it’s ‘not a retro company’ and wants to focus on providing new experiences. While we’re on the subject of SEGA, the third Sonic the Hedgehog movie is now in cinemas, and it was recently reported that a fourth film is being planned for 2027.
