PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S Sales Update Is a Bleak Picture of Xbox

The Wall Street Journal recently published a video report on console gaming, which contained a PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S sales comparison. The figures paint a bleak picture of Microsoft’s hardware, to put it mildly, revealing a massive sales gap between the rival consoles that Xbox will never manage to overcome… at least not in this generation.

PS5 vs Xbox Series X|S sales update: What the figures tell us in September 2024

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S will soon enter their fifth year, with Sony having sold 61.7 million consoles as of June 2024 (official figure), and Microsoft having sold an estimated 28.3 million consoles (official figure undisclosed). The Xbox estimate WSJ used came from market intelligence firm Aldora Intelligence.

Folks over at TweakTown did some fun math with the figures, coming to the conclusion that the PS5 is now outselling Xbox Series X|S by approximately 3:1 — a pretty damning result, but one that explains why Microsoft is trying to “redefine gaming,” as WSJ puts it.

Microsoft is now focusing on generating revenue from subscriptions and catering to virtually every platform under the sun as opposed to promoting its own hardware and exclusives. Although although the company isn’t abandoning Xbox yet, one can’t help but look at these figures and wonder how long before Microsoft Gaming becomes the next SEGA.
