Ghost of Tsushima is very close to assassinating God of War to become PlayStation’s 2nd biggest PC game – WGB

Ghost of Tsushima launched on PC just a few days ago on May 16, nearly four years after it first arrived on PlayStation 4. Sony has stated before that it wants to aggressively push into the PC market and it looks like Ghost of Tsushima is doing exactly that.

According to SteamDB, which tracks all sorts of Steam-related date, Ghost of Tsushima is extremely close to overtaking God of War to become Sony’s 2nd biggest game on PC in terms of concurrent players. It’s currently at 72,477 concurrent players, although that number is slowly creeping upwards.

It’s also being tracked as the 2nd best seller currently.

God of War hits its highest ever peak just two days after its release, managing to put 73,529 into the boots of gaming angriest Dad. The player count slowly dwindled after that as people gradually wrapped up the game’s excellent story and moved on to other things.

That means Ghost of Tsushima is just over 1,000 players away from surpassing God of War.

In 2022 we learned that God of War had sold 971,000 units on Steam in two months of being on sale. Then in 2023, leaked data from Sony indicated that it went on to sell 2.5m units, a number which has presumably grown since then. If Ghost of Tsushima is pushing similar numbers of concurrent players, would it be fair to assume that it’s going to sell equal to or more than God of War? That is pure speculation on my behalf, but I think it’s a fairly safe bet.

It’s also worth noting that Ghost of Tsushima launched at $59.99, whereas God of War launched at $49.99. In other words, Ghosts of Tsushima will also generate slightly more revenue.

Of course, the king of PlayStation mountain on PC is still Helldivers 2 thanks to its whopping 458,709 concurrent player count. These days the player count is significantly lower but still very healthy, peaking at 80,000+ concurrent players every day.

As for other Sony games, Marvel’s Spider-Man sits just behind Ghost of Tsushima with a peak player count of 66,436, while Horizon: Zero Dawn is in 4th with 56,557.

Most successful PlayStation games on PC by player count.

Position Game Peak Player Count
1 Helldivers 2 458,709
2 God of War 73,529
3 Ghost of Tsushima 72,477
4 Marvel’s Spider-Man 66,436
5 Horizon: Zero Dawn 56,557
6 Horizon: Forbidden West 40,462
7 The Last of Us Part 1 36,496
8 Days Gone 27,450
9 Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales 13,539
10 Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection 10,851

Ghost of Tsushima had a little bit of controversy ahead of its release that threatened to effect its sales. Following the Helldivers 2 PSN debacle, Ghost of Tsushima’s developers wanted to make it very clear that while the singleplayer portion of GoT would not require a PSN account, the online Legends mode would not. Furthermore, Ghost of Tsushima is not available for sale in around 180 regions due to those regions not having access to the PlayStation Network, making a lot of people understandably wish that Sony would split the game into two pieces so that the singleplayer, which doesn’t need an account, could be bought by people in those regions.

Some of the game’s negative Steam reviews are due to requiring a PSN account, but the vast majority seem very happy with the experience and with the performance. It is currently sitting at a “Very Positive” rating on Steam.

While it’s impossible to know how much of a difference this has made, the numbers so far look great, and will no doubt bolster the desire for a sequel. Sadly that doesn’t look like it will be coming anytime soon, as Sony has already stated that no new games in its major franchises, which presumably includes Ghost of Tsushima, will be released before March 2025.
