The nominees for The Game Awards 2024 are here, and we finally know which six games have been picked for the shortlist for what Geoff Keighley’s show will call the Game of the Year for 2024, and the nominees for all the other categories.
Out of the 29 categories, there were two games that appeared more than any other, and both of them PS5 exclusive games. In fact, when it comes to games by publisher, Sony came out on top with 16 total nominations. Following are both Xbox and Square Enix tied with 12 nominations, and Sega just below them at 11.
For PlayStation and Square Enix though, most of those nominations came from one game in their catalog. Team Asobi’s joyful platfomer Astro Bot and Square Enix’s continuation of its remake saga, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth tied with 7 nominations each.
Including, of course, Game of the Year. Also on the GOTY nomination list was Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Its inclusion was predicted by players after The Game Awards released a statement clarifying that DLC and expansions are eligible for every category on the list, almost like it was preparing an answer for those who’d immediately question the eligibility of an expansion for a game that released 2 years ago in the GOTY list.
Rounding out the GOTY list is Metaphor: ReFantazio, Black Myth: Wukong and indie game Balatro, which got 5 nominations in total.
Other indie standouts were Neva, which got three nominations, though the much loved Animal Well only scored two.
