PS Portal Sales Still Going Strong a Year Later

PS Portal sales remain robust a year after the remote player launched, surprising critics and naysayers. The handheld remains 2024’s best-selling accessory in the U.S., according to data shared by Circana’s Mat Piscatella.

PS Portal was designed to target a niche, and its sales surprised Sony

One of the biggest criticisms of the PS Portal was its limited functionality given its price. Critics seemed convinced that it was designed for a very small segment of players, and expressed doubts that it would take off like it has.

Sony itself admitted that the PS Portal was designed to target a small segment of consumers who wanted to play games on their PS5 without having to sit in front of a television screen. The company was taken aback by its demand, and has since pledged to maintain inventory.

According to Piscatella, the Midnight Black PS5 DualSense controller was August 2024’s best-selling accessory in the U.S., and the PS Portal remained the best-seller for 2024 year-to-date. On the hardware front, PS5 continues its lead in the country, followed by the Xbox Series consoles. Nintendo Switch, which is nearing the end of its life cycle, saw the sharpest decline in sales.
